Previously I’ve studied Sport and Exercise Science. I’d always had teaching at the back of mind but I wasn’t 100% sure, so decided to work in a school before finally deciding. I took a job as a Teaching Assistant in a secondary school and I loved it. When I did some work on primary PE with the sports co-ordinator I realised that I wanted to work with younger children and teach across the curriculum. I did a short block of volunteering in a primary school to make sure and then I applied. I really wanted to learn whilst being part of a school staff, and the record of trainees being employed after training in the SCITT schools was high, so I applied to Teamworks.
I’m absolutely loving my training. I’ve met lots of like-minded people, and already made some good friends. We have really approachable mentors who are passionate and knowledgeable about their work.
My top tips for applicants: give yourself plenty of time to sort out your application and to prepare for interview; make sure you do your research; read the National Curriculum orders and talk to people in the profession. Make a difference, good luck!
